Extreme Dog Racing Dogs race to determine speed |
It's time to race! Are you ready for the AAPBA's Extreme Dog Racing? Ready to experience the thrill and excitement of racing against others to determine who is the fastest? Look at your dog and ask "Who is the most extreme racing dog?" There are three types of races: flats, hurdles and superflats. The AAPBA sanctioned track must be a minimum of 150 feet in length, preferably 200 feet or longer. The flat and hurdles track is a straight course with a starting box or release area at one end. The superflat track is a longer course with one turn. Behind the finish line is an "safe" area that is able to catch dogs right after the dogs run pass the finish line which is a narrow padded area which funnels and will allow one dog at a time to pass through. In the starting area rests a lure. The lure is a piece of material (fur or plastic) that is attached to a string that is pulled by a "lure racing machine". Dogs are muzzled for safety unless they are running in a single medley. The first dog to cross the designated finish line is the winner. Depending on size of each class, races may be a series of heats, semis, and finals. Dog owners can choose to enter a dog in either 1, 2 or the 3 types of races on race day. Here is a brief run down of the order of events. Your dogs name is called. Approach the starting line of starting box with your dog and wait till judge or assistant gives you intructions to either line up with the starting line or insert your dog into the starting box. Owners must have a muzzle, walking harness or collar and leash applied. The race will begin at judges command or starting box door opens. Handlers or owners must retrieve dog at the fiish line in the most effecient manner possible. Extreme Dog Racing Equipment The Starting Box All EDR dogs that race under the 16 inch height groups are loaded into a starting box that is constructed of wood or plastic. The starting box must have 5 to 6 slots that can fit a dog comfortably with a swinging door that covers the entire front while containing the dogs that are prepared to race. The Lure Racing Machine The lure race machine is a small motor and wheel that turns over 1000 rpm's with a button control switch. The wheel turns thus propelling the string and attached lure in front of the dog(s) racing. The Race Course The race course is set up on natural grass or smooth dirt must be a minimum of 150 feet in length, preferably 200 feet or longer for the flats and hurdles. Over 450 feet in length for the superflats. The sides of the course must be constructed of some type of fencing, plastic or wood and must be over 4 feet high. Hurdles Hurdles can be made up of the many different types of styles and constructions. From wood and large pvc pipes to soft foam foldable hurdles. For the most part all styles are accepted but the most important aspect of the hurdles is they must accommodate all the different height groups in the EDR. Extreme Dog Racing Officials Extreme Dog Racing Judge - stands at the finish line marking the time of single medley finish runs and places dog by assigned collar of colors. Reinforces safety and rules; the judge's decision is final. Controls the speed and action of the lure racing machine. Extreme Dog Racing Starting line Judge - stands at the starting line and helps the load and secure dogs. Makes sure dogs are lined up correctly at the starting line for single medley runs and checks dogs in starting box as well as opens up the starting box gate. Organizes class entries and check muzzles, collars or harnesses for proper fit. The Extreme Dog Racing rules are designed for fairness in competition and for the safety of the dog and its owners. These rules must be followed to avoid disqualification. 1. All dogs must be muzzled when running with more then one dog, Plastic basket muzzles or close-ended cloth muzzles only. (Dogs must not be able to harm each other) all muzzles must be pre-approved for use by judge. 2. Competitors must have their dogs ready to race when called. If you miss your heat there are no refunds (owners and their dogs must be ready). 3. Once entries are loaded into the starting box or ready to run, all handlers shall proceed to the finish line in a timely manner and be ready to receive their dogs. 4. Males compete against females. 5. Dogs must cross finish line for race to qualify. 6. In a hurdle race, all dogs must complete every jump to qualify. 7. Dogs have 1 minute to complete flats, hurdles and superflats to avoid disqualification. 8. If the race is compromised in any way the judge can have the race rerun. 9. The Racing Judge can disqualify any dog engaged in fighting from any further racing. No refund given. 10. All dogs will be measurement and placed in their classes before the racing Judge gives their safety briefing. 11. All dogs must wear a collar, harness and leash at all times. |
